Ilmenau ist das was man draus macht, Uni ist...
a bad place to study
Ilmenau is a terrible place to study for international students.
For one thing, Ilmenau is a tiny little town in the mountains, which is only connected to the outside world by a slow train connection and has no recreational opportunities whatsoever. Job opportunities are practically non-existent here.
Second, Ilmenau is located in rural Thuringia, where one in three people would vote for a fascist party. Racist hostility is the order of the day here away from campus, and students of German origin usually reject you, especially those who study different subjects.
This leads to massive group formation among the individual ethnic groups, as a result of which many learn only fragmentary German. The Germans then take this as an opportunity to further exclude us, which creates a vicious circle. This is especially the case with the Master's programs.
On the private housing market, one can practically not find an apartment, which is why one is forced to live in the dormitories of the student union. These are only partially renovated and further contribute to the segregation of individual ethnic groups, as in some dormitories there are practically only internationals.
The TU Ilmenau cannot be held to higher academic standards. The TU Ilmenau is notorious for its low admission requirements and, due to declining German student numbers, accepts an excessive number of low-qualified students from abroad. These are mostly from emerging countries.
The quality of education is below average in the first semesters, as courses are poorly organized and hard to follow for those who have just arrived in Germany. It is noteworthy that there are practically no teaching materials such as books, which means that you really only have to rely on poorly written lecture notes or lecture notes that are littered with errors. Overall, there is little emphasis on the autodidactic acquisition of knowledge, which makes the university more like a "Hochschule".
The exams are incredibly poorly organized. On the one hand, the exam dates are not fixed until quite late, which means that neither vacations, visits home nor internships can be planned, and on the other hand, the exam period drags on for an incredibly long time, which means that there are practically no semester breaks. The content of the exams is usually manageable, but the tasks are often overly complicated, which makes it difficult to understand the questions and answer them adequately, especially for foreign students.
Occasionally, for no apparent reason, exams can be significantly more difficult than seminar assignments and practice exams would suggest, resulting in extremely high failure rates.
This results in excessively long study periods that far exceed the standard period of study, jeopardizing the receipt of scholarships and other financial benefits.
