Ein Studium (PhD) mit Hürden
Not good experience as an external prae-doc
As an external doctoral student in computer science (Prae-doc), I felt like an outsider. However, this practically only depends on the supervisor / professor:
First, thanks to the professors who are open and knowledge-based! There are very good opportunities at this huge and diverse university – from social to science, from local to global.
Where to even start? As an external prae-doc, you even do not get informed about anything, since there are no circular emails about something like internal talks. No legal or formal mails on studies in general, where to find support, who is the contact person, funding, etc. Because you are not at the campus, as internal doctoral students are, you don't notice anything. And that is apparently typical for the University of Vienna that there is a lack of understanding and working towards improving services. An example: the document base is so outdated, so you only get the latest version on manual request. Then you have to manually fill out.... That was the normal case.
A culture that seems to favor internal students (i.e. with an MSc from the same department). This is already evident in the manner in which you are spoken to, formal you (Sie) or informal you (du). At this point, it is not difficult to guess which form is used for external PhD students.
Interns should finish after three years, especially if the professor wants it that way. I have seen from several examples that external parties should not close at all. But they don't even get any funding, nor any support. Even computers and the Internet have to pay for them.
Anyway, thanks to one of the oldest universities world-wide, supporting science and teaching.

- Good opportunities in general
- Not really fair. Much effort into unnecessary things since the lack of support.
Wie reagiert deine Hochschule auf die Corona-Krise?
Good support to distance learning / distance meeting / virtual rooms.
