Overall, an amazing study experience
The M.A. Media and Communication Science in TU Ilmenau is a predominantly research-oriented study program taught mostly in English. The curriculum of this program is divided into distinct departments, that specializes in different topics related to Media, Diplomacy, Technology, etc. As a student, you can personalize your schedule with the domains of study that interests you the most.
To start, there are many positive aspects to highlight from it. In summary, the campus ambience is easy-going, the contents of the courses are up-to-date with the current trends, the faculty is very competent, experienced and accessible. The university library has an extensive area for you to study, and it possesses many updated publications on several scientific fields.
Due to the english-speaking nature of the course, it attracts international students from different parts of the world. This international aspect is celebrated with a year-round range of events on campus (ISWI, etc), and they also have a very active and dedicated guidance department for these students (We4You).
In my experience, I didn't encounter serious issues or subjects worth of an extensive criticism, other than some punctual problems related to the administration of certain lectures (that were later given the time to discuss and implement improvements), and the University's digital system of accessing your data or schedule for the semester. For instance, there are only very strict specific procedures if you want to view your grades or student status, either on terminals on campus or with a card reader. Moreover, in case you want to access the schedule for the courses of the semester, they have a very user-unfriendly system that needs improvement. Apart from that, many procedures were improved throughout my studies, such as the information regarding signing up for your program, your status as an international student (APC or Master's) and so on.
Finally, Ilmenau, despite its small size, is a very pleasant and acessible city to live in. The cost of living is very low, compared to other parts of the country, and the quality of life it provides is outstanding, being surrounded by a national park and nearby cultural sites. Other than that, the city is well connected to one of the most central train hubs of the country (Erfurt), so you can easily arrive from Frankfurt, Munich or Berlin.
Overall, my experience was amazing, I learned many things, made friends who are now some of my closest, and I truly had one of the best years of my life there. Therefore, I highly recommend applying to it.

- Faculty accessibility, student interactions, up-to-date communication trends and topics are studied, as well as the opportunity to learn new features (statistics, coding, etc)
- group work can be sometimes problematic (it was a significant issue for me and several colleagues), the course's syllabus are not easily available before the start of the course, and the schedule of the semester can be complicated to understand
Wie reagiert deine Hochschule auf die Corona-Krise?
I was very pleased by the active response from the faculty and program's guidance office to provide information and update the status whenever a new set of rules came to place. My program started in 2019, so I got to experience both the program before and during the pandemic period.
The overall structure of the courses, made by online videos, forums, meetings and presentations, was accessible and easy to follow, and all professors were very open to manage their courses digitally.
Some issues were encountered, such as some servers being unstable, but, as a whole, it worked well.
