After studying at the University of Konstanz, I fell in love with German education. I decided to do my master in International Management at HSD (which turned out to be my worst decision).
First of all, the program was supposed to be in English with a bit of German but mostly English. However, since my group consisted of ~25 Germans and one "lucky" foreign student (me) some classes were taught completely in German. For example, Qualitative Research Methods. Even though I am very fond of the teacher, the class is being taught in German now because (quote) "Everyone will understand it better in native language". Even if it is fully in German, why does the CV of this course says it is half in English? Moreover, the law class which is believed to be one of the most difficult ones was extremely confusing: the teacher was talking in English half of the time (giving the core explanations and citing HGB and BGB in German, of course) but the powerpoints were in German.
Secondly, some teachers are horrible. For example, the Business Simulation Game in the 1st semester was quite bad - the tool itself and the teacher appointed to this class. The website with the simulation was not working properly, the teacher instead of having a class due to the schedule on Monday could set a meeting for the group on Friday evening. The notes for the 1st-semester subject were sent only last week (end of June). Some teachers had super primitive presentations full of text. No wonder everyone was super bored.
Secondly, I do not feel I am getting much to know. I would not say it is a very practical oriented program.
Thirdly, I would like to note that almost all important e-mails are sent in German language only. I do speak German and I was aware that HSD requires a certain level of German, however I am convinced they should take into account foreign students and provide the information in both languages.
One more thing I did not like is the amount of group work. In the 2nd semester of my master I have got group work for EVERY class. This is extremely inconvenient, as for me. Most of my colleagues work and sometimes it can be quite challenging to find suitable time for everyone to meet. I would prefer to have more individual tasks, of course.
Seems that there are only disadvantages? Do not get me wrong, there are some good aspects. For example, the Moodle platform. It is quite advanced and easy to understand. However, I had only 3 subjects within 2 semesters which could be found there which is a pity.
No doubts, there are some excellent teachers and interesting subjects! However, I will remember HSD as a bad experience and would never recommend it to anyone.
