The flexible curriculum combines required and elective courses, shaped by students’ individual interests. Individual project work is developed in close collaboration with an advisor, representing the specializations offered.

Regular colloquia provide opportunities to discuss ideas, insights, and experiences with fellow students, artists, and theorists. Throughout the program, students receive constructive and critical guidance from practitioners and theorists. Project development follows three phases:

  • Research and focus
  • Experimentation and conceptual refinement
  • Realization, documentation, and presentation

Several interim presentations enable students to receive feedback and further develop their projects. Students are encouraged to make independent use of workshops, tutors, and other resources.

The program takes three or four semesters, depending on students’ prior qualifications.

Internationalization begins right on campus at Merz Akademie:

The Master’s program is taught in English, bringing together students from around the world at the Merz Akademie campus in Stuttgart. Exchange students from partner universities also join the community in Stuttgart each semester. International guest lecturers contribute to the program, including interdisciplinary workshops during the annual Workshop Week, which takes place once each semester instead of regular courses and seminars.

Students at Merz Akademie can also gain international experience by spending a semester abroad at one of the 25 partner universities in Europe and beyond. Various scholarship opportunities are available to support students during their semester abroad.

Design your future

Amidst catastrophic wars, the rise of authoritarianism, global inequalities and instabilities, and the devastating effects of climate change, but also the challenges of a continually changing mediascape, especially the rapid growth of AI, we look towards art and design as models of human activity that can help us to create new terms of engagement for working, thinking, and living together.

The Master’s degree opens up career opportunities at the intersection of design, art, media, and research. Graduates pursue careers as artists, UX/UI specialists, curators, research associates, creative strategists in agencies, or activists working in the field of social design. The degree also qualifies graduates for admission to a PhD program.

Excellent facilities
Students have 24/7 access to the labs on campus, including a green screen studio, sound studio, photography studio, screen-printing workshop, and VR lab. These facilities provide the space and resources to develop and realize individual projects.

International connections and networks
Through collaborative projects, exhibitions, and student-organized symposia, students gain valuable experience beyond the curriculum. These opportunities enable them to build professional networks and make important connections for their future careers while still studying.

Close individual supervision, small class sizes, and a close-knit community support students throughout the process of developing and realizing a major individual project that can serve as a springboard for their future careers.
