I finished the study programme in 2020 and do not regret my choice. In fact, I would even decide to study Environmental and Resource Management again!

In my opinion ERM is a Bachelor's programme that teaches you to understand all three pillars of sustainability: the environmental/natural sciences one, the economic one and the social one. This broad education is really important as people in the environmental sector often work at interdisciplinary interfaces and a solid knowledge basis is necessary for successful communication. I started to study ERM directly after school and had no idea the academic site of all the different natural sciences and economic fields. So ERM helped me to figured out my personal interest, on which I will focus in future. In this way, ERM supported me in gaining a foothold in the academic world and making a profound decision for a specializing Master's programme.

During my semester abroad - this is a mandatory part of ERM, normally in the 5th semester - I took only Master programme courses and the knowledge I gained before at BTU prepared me well for the advanced level in those courses.

Obviously, BTU is a university. Thus, it is totally normal that lectures - especially in the beginning of a Bachelor's programme - are theory-loaded and not practical. However, if you would like to get more insight in the practical work, don't hesitate to ask professors if they have some work for you. I am sure you will find a way to engage! :) Furthermore, you will have multiple economic and management courses as you are not only studying Environmental Sciences, but also Management.

As ERM is an international programme and some students have never learned chemistry or similar before, things from school will be repeated in order to give everyone the same foundation on which they can built on, but you will progress much faster than in school. And for sure, studying in an international study programme is really rewarding! Firstly, ERM has an additional coordinator that helps you with organisational stuff. Furthermore, you learn a lot about other cultures and understand which impacts environmental change has all over the world. And last but not least, parties as culture nights are superb!

  • Semester Abroad, International student community, small classes, engaged professors which are easily reachable (of course not all, but definitely some!), amazing library for studying purposes!
  • no innovative teaching style, only a few courses that you can choose freely, sometimes overlapping content in multiple courses
