Since it is an English study program, here my experiences in English:
- poor general organization: multiple versions of the study regulation, sometimes information are lacking, unreadable. But as a student, you have to exactly know what the study regulation states. Teachers of classes will not know what your requirements are, if you don't know them yourself, you'll end up working more/not enough for the credits. E.g., we all wrote a term paper in one class (this was the compulsory working load for the class set by the teacher) which was not necessary for our modules regulations (there were 3 other classes in which the same could have happened, but one teacher contacted us since the grade could not be entered into to the grade program, so the unnecessary term paper only happened in one class).
- poor choice of classes: It had the feeling of a school schedule and not of a masters. With the current study regulation, there is ONE module that can be freely chosen (which comes with compulsory classes again), and two classes for another module.
- poor class attunement: the same piece of information/theory will be discussed over and over again in multiple classes. Even advanced classes will often times start at 0 again. Or up until the third semester, there will be term papers to hand in, but a scientific writing class will only be offered in the third semester. Writing term papers was especially difficult for some students who did not have a linguistic background and were not familiar with writing linguistic papers. Moreover, some students were not familiar with writing in English. Hence, the order of classes (i.e., scientific writing class in the 3rd semester) really does not make sense but will not b be changed either.
- the workload in the first semester is ridiculous: sometimes there were 10 really long papers (each +50 pages) to read for the upcoming week in different classes, plus the weekly written assignments.
- In the first semester, there is 2 classes (12 Credits) which are basically without any content. There's a presentation of each lab with compulsory readings of papers and presentation of students (and one written exam which even the teacher didnt take seriously). Another class with random student presentations about freely chosen topics, but without any criteria to follow.
- "experimental" in the title, but not systematic class about experimental set-ups/designs.
- having a strong background in linguistics is not good, it results in being 'bored' for most of the times. Having little background in linguistics is not good either, it results in not understanding the contents.
- Compulsory internship only in their labs (150 hours): This would have been a great opportunity to do an internship abroad, but this is not possible (even though they "strongly encourage students to do a semester abroad" according to the study regulation). The argument is that the content is not controlled in other labs. However, in my opinion the content is not controlled for in their labs either. Everybody has/had different experiences. Mine was that I was literally an unpaid Hiwi. I didn't learn much about the overall process of science, but rather did tasks that were mostly not even put in the big context or theories the lab was working on for me. I had to run after information/meetings myself, ask for tasks all the time to have the internship finished in one semester.
- there is two classes in a module, the first is ungraded. The second class will then carry the grade for the full 12 Credits; this was counter-intuitive for me. Why not the average?

All in all, it felt like a chaos at all times. It is on the student to make sense out of it and find a way to profit (for me this were the amazing stats classes!). I had a strong background in linguistics and was bored most of the time.
For people who want to have more "freedom" to choose and want to have the opportunity to study formal aspects of linguistics, they should choose the general linguistics master at the Potsdam uni.
  • Fancy master title
  • Poor organization, fixed schedule, no choice
