- Ulm University is highly ranked, and Ulm is a beautiful city, perfect for studying and relaxing.
Vollzeitstudium
The programme is spread over four terms (two years), with three terms of course work and one term to write the master's thesis. After the first term, you can choose to specialize in actuarial science, financial economics or financial mathematics. Each specialization offers an excellent education for your future career.
The specialization in Actuarial Science is the right choice for you if you are interested in studies with a focus on actuarial science and methods applied in the insurance industry. Ulm University is one of the world’s leading institutions in this field. You can also take the entrance examinations of the German Association of Actuaries (DAV) during your studies at Ulm University.
The specialization in Financial Economics focuses on understanding and predicting stock returns, on measuring credit and market risk, and it makes you familiar with financial institutions and markets. The specialization provides a lot of flexibility. Instead of taking high-level mathematics courses, you can take econometrics or machine learning courses. You can also take courses in actuarial science.
The specialization in Financial Mathematics is the right choice for students who have a strong interest in mathematics and want to become experts in the mathematical and stochastic concepts widely used in the financial industry. You will learn to model financial processes and to use your knowledge for evaluating complex financial products.
We regularly update course contents to adapt to changing topics and trends. Whether you want to learn more on cryptocurrencies, climate risk or machine learning - there is the opportunity to do so, in each of the three specializations.
- Bachelor's Degree. Applicants must have completed or be in the process of completing a bachelor's degree in a quantitative and mathematically oriented discipline. Applicants with degrees in actuarial science, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or physics are usually eligible. A degree in business or economics can be sufficient if you have successfully completed a significant number of courses in mathematics and statistics.
- Interest in Mathematics. Note that courses in financial mathematics and mathematics, which are an integral part of two specializations of the MSc Finance (Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics), are on the level of mathematics programs. Applicants interested in the specialization Financial Economics should note that the specialization is still fairly quantitative compared to many other Finance programs.
- English language test. Not needed if your Bachelor’s was taught completely in English.
- No background in finance needed. The compulsory courses of the first semester are structured such that they serve as an introduction to finance for newcomers, and as a refresher and upgrade for students who already have a background in finance.

MS actuarial science
I love the study at ulm more practical and mostly oriented with industry. The university is located hill top has lot facilities and also very successful in actuarial science as top 3 in the world. The research in mathematics and related fields are simply good.
Very great experience
The teachers are global level researchers in their fields with lots of years of experience. Would gladly recommend it for English speaking students looking for a path in actuarial science (the path I chose when I arrived), even though the other two emphases (Financial Economics and Financial Mathematics) are pretty great too.
International experience
There are many international students in campus which really improves the experience, the lecturers are truly experienced. The possibility to gain the DAV certification from the university is truly an excellent opportunity for aspiring to be actuaries in Germany
Totally recommend
Great lecturers, enough freedom to construct your own study program and the system of online learning is very convenient. You can choose one of three specializations: Financial Mathematics, Financial Economics or Accturial Science after the first semester.
