Mainly statistics and R. and performance pressure
It started off pretty positive. All though the main focus is not really on development psychology per se but on replicating and critiquing experimental measures using statistics and the R programming tool, I thought that there was an open and friendly atmosphere. I was wrong! Suddenly, things changed drastically. We were told things like: Now it will start getting serious e.t.c and that some of us failed in assignments but we weren't told who. We had to wait days until we finally found out who had failed and who not. Torture! I would have expected a faculty of psychology and education to have more sensitivity then to demotivate students in such a manner. Moreover, I had to endure sentences in my coursework feedback, such as: there is a smarter way to do that! e.t.c Also, there is definitely a tendency to point out the negative when grading assignments and to not give a student credit for anything he/she might have done well. For me personally, this was completely demotivating and downright humiliating. Luckily I could terminate my studies but I know other international students had a more difficult time as they were receiving funding and hence, could not as easily change course. In conclusion, a masters programme focusing on becoming a researcher, which is perfect if that is your educational goal, with a lot of potential, but lacking people skills to create an enjoyable atmosphere for students to really be happy and thriving whilst studying. A plus point were my fellow students.
- A lot of up to date research. Knowledgable teachers from inside the field( some not all).
- performance pressure, lack of creating a trustworthy environment
