Vorheriger Bericht
Top address for childhood research training
Truly not what I expected
I am currently in my first semester and I had such high expectations for this course given the information provided on the LFE website, however, I quickly realised that the actual course was very different to how I'd imagined it would be.
Since the start, organisation has been a huge problem. Nearly every week, a class was cancelled (sickness seems to be a real issue here) disrupting the course flow and slowly decreasing motivation. Contacting staff members to obtain a required statement proved to be very stressful as it went from receiving no reply to a load of miscommunication regarding the pick-up location. Unhelpful and confusing.
I don't feel that all modules are taken seriously. 'Group work' entails a bunch of students reading through a paper and presenting parts of it. Stimulating and dynamic? Not really. I feel as though the lecturers are content with being researchers themselves and therefore no knowledge needs to be passed onto us as students. As one lecturer said 'this is what you get from people that aren't real researchers.' Any thoughts/comments 'outside the box' get redirected back into basic thinking and I genuinely do not think that critical thinking is preferred on this course.
'The program offers the opportunity to conduct early childhood studies in a number of research labs throughout Leipzig'
‘A 6-week internship at an active research laboratory’
It's very important to note that although this is stated in the leaflet for this Master's, there is no actual support in finding these opportunities for international students that do not speak German. I have spent a lot of time researching from the beginning and a little guidance would have gone a long way. Additionally, I have recently been informed that this department does not have connections with international nurseries, therefore, obtaining data for a Master's thesis will be a challenge in itself.
I'm not quite sure why this course is being conducted in English to be honest. I would advise anyone considering this course to have at least basic German skills. 'International' misleads us into believing that there are opportunities for all and that this is an exciting way to bring together people from different backgrounds, however, the lack of support just creates tension.
The only positive thing I can truly say about this course is that the Developmental Psychology Lecture Module is worth attending. The content is very interesting and presented in an understandable way. All questions are answered thoroughly and at the end of the class, there is no reason to feel lost and confused (compared to some of the other modules).
All in all, I hope the course improves with time but for now, I am not able to say I recommend this course.
