Over the last decades, biomedical research has become increasingly interdisciplinary in nature, focusing heavily on the analysis of system-wide quantitative information. In fact, quantitative methods of computational and theoretical modeling pervade all biological sciences. The presence of evermore sophisticated high-throughput techniques in understanding complex biological processes pose new computational challenges that must be addressed, in particular for data integration and model-based data interpretation.

The Computational Life Science (MSc) program provides an academically challenging, broad, and research-oriented degree that meets the demand for expertise in this ever-changing field. This two-year graduate program encompasses all computational, theoretical, and mathematical approaches in biology and life sciences at Jacobs University, and is geared towards bioinformaticians, physicists, computer scientists, and applied mathematicians. The Computational Life Science program is strongly linked to related programs and research areas, such as theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and molecular life science.

Voraussetzungen

Applicants to the Computational Life Science program must have a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree or equivalent (minimum three years of study). Your application needs to include the following documents:

  • Letter of Motivation
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • University transcript in English or German
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate or equivalent (may be handed in later)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • English language proficiency test with a minimum score of 90 (TOEFL) or 6.5 (IELTS). Alternatively, students may submit a confirmation from their previous university that their education was conducted in English.
Inhalte

The Computational Life Science program offers a tailor-made curriculum comprising lectures, seminars and laboratory trainings. Courses cover foundational as well as advanced topics and methods.

1. CORE 1 - Foundations of Computational Life Science (20 ECTS Credit Points)

This module equips students with a common methodological ground and provides an introduction to the topics of the program. Included courses:

  • Introduction to Computational Life Science 1
  • Introduction to Computational Life Science 2
  • Computational Life Science Colloquium

2. CORE 2 - Electives and Remedial Courses (15 ECTS credit points)

This module allows students to either make up for missing academic prerequisites or to strengthen their knowledge in specific areas of Computational Life Science.

3. CORE 3 - Advanced Topics and Applications (20 ECTS credit points)

In this module, students take courses in two of the four specialization areas listed below.

  • Computational Systems Biology, Computational Physics and Biophysics
  • Bioinformatics and RNA Biology, Imaging and Modeling in Medicine
  • Ecological Modeling and Theoretical Biology
  • Applied Mathematics and Numerical Methods

4. CAREER - Skills and Languages (15 ECTS credit points)

In this module, students select language courses and other courses preparing them for their professional career.

5. RESEARCH 1 - Lab Rotations (20 ECTS credit points)

In this module, students take two lab rotations in research groups of their choice.

6. RESEARCH 2 - Master’s Thesis (30 ECTS credit points)

In the fourth semester, students conduct research and write a master’s thesis guided and supported by their academic supervisor.
