Erfahrungen Energy and Finance
Multi-perspective insight into the word “energy”
Brief intro to myself: Did bachelor in China and came here for master almost four years ago. Had had really little idea to EaF but have merely dropped into it by chance. Maybe I’m too ambitious, but I do feel what we are doing with our professional knowledge may contribute to a cleaner future and to a better world. So wanna wrap up my story so far like this: If I really get trapped by EaF, I’d dig further down to get a tunnel out.
I did have difficulties in learning (means get used to the German teaching and exam style), in language (means try to switch between English, German and Chinese as smooth and fast as possible) and in finding a job (means get student job or internship). I do take much more time than this major schedules for finishing my study, but I definitely benefit more and don’t regret my choice. If I had been rushing between classes and finish exam with 4.0 just for graduate on time, I wouldn’t have experienced so much. I have a job as research assistant, took more than 10 extra courses (elective and language), and learned to be quantitative in only two years, as my Bachelor totally had nothing to do with it.
Current situation: Maybe it’s unbelievable, but I’m now a fresh intern in the strategic department of RWE AG. It’s out of my imagination that how high the position of my team in the RWE Group is and how lucky I was in being on board. It’s my great pleasure to work with an international team together to help RWE to position itself, to shape the future and to push the energy transition slowly forward.
Key point 1: Study here can be fun.
Except for old-school slides and the same corny joke that people can even recite, here you can hear about what’s new in a leisure way. Firstly, we can out for excursion once per semester (1-2 days depends on the season), during which we’re really allowed to go inside a power plant to see how the giant machines run and how the whole system works, which are untypical for students in business school (Don’t think the safe keeper will easily let you in if you go there alone). Then, international congresses like E-World is free for students on the last day to experience the state-of-the-art concepts in the expo and to get in touch with HR from your dreamed, future employers in the Career Forum. The student-organized Essener EnergieForum provides interesting workshops given by experts with only a little cost; while the Essener Energiegespräche (personally prefer the translation Essen’s Energy Dialogue) acts as an interface of academy and industry. What’s more, materials of some courses are updated continuously to keep in pace with the current development of the real energy world outside the ivory tower.
Key point 2 (based on my understanding to EaF so far): We’re standing for more sustainable development and dedicating to a better future.
The eternal, classic goal of economics is maximizing profit, but are other things beside earning money unimportant? Clean air, greenfield and a more livable city etc. are not our own belongings but what we have to share with others. What if we’d do something awesome that benefits the environment? That’s the big question we set out to answer and are keep working on. To get better prepared for the future and to endeavor to enlarge the social welfare for everyone, a larger think tank is always desirable. At least I’m in, striving my own effort, together with people who share the same vision with me – if all goes to plan – to help to reduce fossil fuel consumption, to achieve a low carbon footprint and whatever you’d imagine or even beyond current belief.
Key point 3: My reflection on some facts that are viewed as troubles somehow.
1) Too much to memorize: whatever we do, we always need to remember something. But for learning, comprehending is more imperative than remembering. Learning is about able to apply, not able to recite. Your comprehension structures the world, computer’s memory helps you to store it.
2) Longer study time: Just as soft fire makes sweet melt, it’s the time you devote makes what you want precious. Wide content, math formula and complex ideas may take people more time to understand, however, learning is about to improve oneself, not to get promoted as soon as possible or to gain a fortune as fast as possible. University spreads knowledge – the crystallization of wisdom, not lottery – a scrap of paper with your lucky number on to strike gold. Grade and diploma matter, but experience speaks louder.
3) Content too wide to grasp the key point: Perhaps that’s typical in interdisciplinary areas of study. Based on physical energy carrier, energy economics involves both in optimizing power plant and grid operation and in analyzing their interactions like power-to-X and sector coupling. That’s also why physics and engineering come in. Regarding energy trading, math knowledge is necessary to derive an optimal trading portfolio and to calculate profit and loss on stock exchange. And that’s why math and finance matter. Now even politician need numbers to support their claim, so should be a graduate titled with “master of SCIENCE”. There’s no doubt why quantitative method plays an essential role in forecasting, back-testing etc. Of course students aren’t necessary to become a master of everything. What people learn in school means to simplify future life when they encounter something similar to solve. If you already know your interest, congrat and stick to it. If not, the variety of choices are available all the time for your testing.
A HEMF professor said in his class: “To prepare for your future job, the more quantitative, the better.” Never have I ever heard of the terms like time series, martingale and unit commitment and dispatch that seem to be complicated on the first sight and they also frightened me at the very beginning. But that prof also said: “Every day comes new challenge is not bad, isn’t it?” If you’d pull yourself out of the comfort zone to learn, to experience and to grow, all the teachers here are always on your side. Time-saving while short and simple.
Supposed to be a master (student) who can master something, practical skills in both software and language are especially helpful for you. Here you can learn how to create amazing colorful 3D graphs in seconds with a couple of shortcuts and a little keyboarding, as well as scientific expression and technical terms in both German and English (maybe also in other languages from your classmates).
Anyway, EaF is an apple in my eye ‘cuz I love what I’m doing, but it’s definitely not a sour grape (only if you’re the fox in Aesop’s fable) as some people think.
